Yep, no Latin phrase here that I could think is befitting (couldn't find Latin for politics). This is something i wrote last night, just trying to put my thoughts into words. It's my view on politics and some ideas i have, there'll probably be lots to disagree or agree with, and hopefully nothing to offend, but at the end of the day I'm just a 16 year old with no real aims or knowledge about British Democracy apart from what i have vaguely learnt in Sociology. I've never really looked into it too much so this is just me having a go.
Also, it would be a great help if you could post your thoughts on this so that I know how to improve in the future and that I might know if i cross any line of somesort.
So this is something that has been on my mind quite a fair amount recently, concerning what my political views are and what I think of how British Democracy could be run. I'll just start with this introduction by saying that my mind is always rolling, and always changing, I might think something one day, and then completely change my thoughts on it another, which is something I need to learn to get past. Following on from this, a focus of this post will be on what I think in terms of politics, but don't expect essays concerning my thoughts, I'm more likely to write a few sentences about an idea I have had, but I don't think that if I was into politics, that I could write dozens of pages on ideas.
So first of all, what are my political views? Well, there aren't any parties that I specifically support at the moment, but I have had ideas of what I think so I’ll go with that, I'll discuss some of my most recent thoughts, which means it will likely be affected by what has been discussed in the mass media in the past few months, or something I have been learning about recently leading up to the Sociology exam I had this morning (which I think went tremendously well... for me anyway. I'm a C/D student so I’m not usually amazing in sociology exams, and despite my lack of revision - a bit but not enough - I think I did extremely well for myself), and funnily enough, I did questions regarding Power in Britain, and did have quite a thought-track into politics. I'm not sure what I would call myself, but I think that some good ideas for British politics are (these are things I have thought of myself, so are original until proven otherwise):
· More taxes for large corporations and less for individuals, - There are many very large businesses that make billions of £ in profit each year, surely they could spare a certain percentage of this? I'm not sure what it is now, but if a company makes so much profit each year, and then they should be made to pay more. And for those companies that practice tax evasion, they should have expensive fines to compensate for what they haven't paid. I'm not saying I dislike tax evading companies, because it turns out a lot of my favourite places do it, Starbucks, Amazon, Apple? But if companies don't pay what they should, it means that the individual has to pay more because taxes are being raised to compensate for what isn't paid. And as far as I’m aware, tax is pretty high anyway, yet there are hundreds if not thousands of businesses (and a fair share of the bourgeoisie, - the higher classed citizens) that either can’t pay any tax, or just don't pay enough. As an example, if an individual has to pay a certain percentage of their salary, which leaves them with bare minimum leftover, whereas large businesses pay tax but then still have millions, if not billions in profit that just go back into an endless cycle, it wouldn't necessarily affect them too much.
· I also am a strong believer that if Britain wants to clean up its border control, and stem the constant flow of immigrants that come into Britain and take the jobs of British individuals, then what needs to happen is that a joint international scheme which not only channels money into Less Economically Developed countries, but needs to monitor how the money is spent too. I'm not racist or fascist or any of that, I do not aim to offend anyone here, but all I’m saying is, Britain loses too much money because of increasing levels of immigrants and having to pay to have them in the country. It's true, apart from paying for travel and some accommodation and necessities, individuals coming in from other countries, it's mainly the British Government and British tax that pays for those individuals to stay and have a basic living. I do not intent to be hypocritical in anyway (I'm an Immigrant from Grenada, BUT I have a dual nationality, where unfortunately, so many others do not hold British nationality but rather that of a European country.) but if any hint of hypocrisy comes across (I hope not) does that mean the point is invalid? Back to the international scheme idea, I think it would be better if Britain and a coalition of other European countries (or a European Union plan) all put together some money to increase the economy of 'lesser' countries, which have much more troubles with their economy than a simple British recession. I just think, that if instead of allowing members of countries from the European Union to have the right to live in any other E.U country, and instead as a union they boost the economies of less economically developed countries, which makes thousands of individuals reliant on the right to live anywhere in the European Union (I hope this all makes sense when you read this), then less individuals will be so reliant on that, and can actually afford a basic living in their own country.
· I don't know if you heard about this or not, but 23 out of 29 members of the 2010 British coalition were millionaires. That is a problem, right? "Hey there, we're your new government, and we want to help you as much as we can and make this country stable, but were all millionaires and we don't really want to share our money with you, get your own jobs." Now, this is what I feel like is happening. But don't get me wrong, I’d love to be rich and famous, who wouldn't? I'd love a nice house, an Audi R8, a stable job and fame. But if I dedicated myself to running a government, I wouldn't be focusing on gaining money, rather I’d be focusing on donating lots of it. It's not like owning a two bedroom flat and a simple car prevents someone from running a government, and when you're prime minister, you get to live in 10 downing street, so it's not as if giving away a million £ or two is going to affect you. In school, we are taught as older years, to set an example. It's the same principles that should be practiced for politicians, because they are the people that are at the head of our society, they are the ones that fight to run it. So they should be setting an example to other rich individuals and companies.
· Imperialism. I know it's not likely that Britain is going to go invade some country and rebuild its empire, and I’m not saying this should happen. What I am saying is that I am a fan of Empires, if Britain still had its empire then we would generate much more income and be able to run more establishments which provides more jobs and lots more businesses. Going back to my second point (kind of), for example if Britain was an empire that had control of say, Poland, (I say Poland only because it has become a large stereotype for immigrants to be polish) then we could generate money into the Polish government, which creates more jobs and businesses, and then as a part of the British Empire, Britain would be able to control how the economy was being run, so would be able to have control over what happens with its money. (One of my more wacky thoughts)
· A touch of communist views.. I'm not a communist, looking at history, and even modern day communism, all I see are governments that say they want equality, but then develop superiority. Anyway, this doesn't mean that their idea's aren't plausible. I'm thinking of government-run businesses, if the rise of immigration will continue, and if poverty is going to continue then maybe the government should start their own business that is sure to generate income, for example smoking. I know the government is relatively against smoking, but I’m sure there must be billions of £ spent each year on cigarettes, if this were to be run by the government, surely the British Economy will be massively boosted ?
